GINGERBREAD MEN

You have probably noticed that gingerbread men only "come out" during winter. This is because ginger is a very Christmassy ingredient and hot baked cookies are obviously better during cold weather (and to be enjoyed with hot chocolate!).

But did you know when people started to bake these little figures?

Experts say that gingerbread dates from the 16th century and that the very first time that this figural biscuit-making was practiced was at the court of Elizabeth I of England. She had gingerbrean men and women made and presented in the likeness of some of her most important guests.
