3 Reasons to Learn English Idioms

1.  If you don’t understand common idioms in English, it’ll be difficult to communicate like a native speaker.

2.  As idioms are used so frequently in everyday English, if you don’t know them, it’s almost impossible to understand the context.

3.  Learning common idioms will help you fit in with most situations, whether it’s at work, studying or going out with friends.

The secret to understanding English idioms is never to look at them or read them in a literal sense — the words won’t make sense together. Instead, you need to learn them in context to understand their true meaning.

Let's look at some examples:

A LIGHT BULB GOES OFF/ON

Not literally, of course!  It's used to say that a person suddenly understands something or has a great idea.

"After thinking about the problem for several days, a light bulb went off in her head, and she knew how to solve it."

FACE THE MUSIC

Literally, facing the music means turning your body to the direction of the music and standing in front of it. But somebody tells you to face the music, there’s a much more serious meaning.
It means to accept responsibility for something you have done: Maybe you lied to your parents and they found out the truth and now you have to face the music and accept the punishment.

PAY AN ARM AND A LEG FOR SOMETHING

Your aren't actually using an arm or a leg to pay for a product!  It means to pay a lot of money for something.

“I paid an arm and a leg for these new shoes.”
