10 ACTIVITIES TO IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH OVER THE SUMMER

08 Jul 2019       ILC Batalha

Another school year has come to an end, but it’s still important for you to continue practising your English over the summer holidays. Here are a few tips you might find useful!

1. KEEP A JOURNAL
You find writing compositions in class boring. They're great for academic development but it's summer time, so wait for the new school year to focus on your school work again. Over the summer, why not keep a diary? Every day, write an entry in English about any topic you want. This will help build up your vocabulary and natural understanding of sentence structures and most importantly, you'll be enjoying what you're writing!

2. LISTEN TO MUSIC
Listening to music is a great way to perfect pronunciation and understand a different culture. Another idea is to listen to different English radio stations from around the world - check out the radio stations in Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia ... the sky's the limit!

3. LOOK IN THE MIRROR
Don't get too lost in your own eyes ... you've got work to do. Try practising some of your English while looking in the mirror each day for a few minutes. This will help you to see the movement of your mouth when you make particular sounds. Perhaps tell your family what you're doing when you're talking to yourself in the bathroom. LOL

4. DOWNLOAD A DICTIONARY
Every day, find 3 random words from a dictionary and make sure you know their meanings. Make it a daily challenge to work these words into a sentence for that specific day. This is also a great way to practise your idioms!

5. READ ENGLISH WEBSITES
The world changes and we change with it. Over 50% of all websites are in English so you'll never struggle to find fresh content to read. Perhaps take a look at some of the English speaking news sites and see what they're reporting. The BBC and CNN websites are good places to start.

6. TONGUE TWISTERS
These are fantastic as they help you exercise the muscles used to make particular sounds. Pick a new tongue twister to perfect every week this summer. Then, as you go about your day, week and month, you can keep these sounds through repetition of your newly gained tongue twisters.

7. CHAT IN ENGLISH
While hanging out with your friends, why not speak to each other in English? This is another great way to improve your vocabulary, pronunciation and intonation, so give it a try! You'll see that it isn't as difficult as you might think and you may even have fun doing it!

8. READ! READ! READ!
There's nothing better than relaxing in the sun with a brand new book. Start with an easier book to build up your confidence. It might not be easy at first but you'll quickly get the hang of it and before you know it, you'll be reading novels written by your favourite authors.

9. DO AN INTENSIVE COURSE
If you have difficulties in English, a 2-week intensive course might be a good choice. The time will fly by so you'll still have plenty of time to enjoy your summer holidays. Call us for more information on which intensive courses are available.

10. WATCH FILMS
Who doesn't enjoy watching a good film or TV series? Once again, challenge yourself and watch them without any subtitles in your native language. This will help you build up not only your listening and interpretation skills, but also your vocabulary. Give it a try!
